The Seven Grandfather Teachings

The Seven Grandfather Teachings (traditional Indigenous narrative construct) were employed to assist in re-connecting. Next one-on-one settings, group circle and circle discussions help reflect on each of the teachings. A fundamental goal is to ensure that the Seven Grandfather Teachings stay “Top of Mind” honouring their purpose and thus becoming the basis for personal and group decision-making. Truth

Truth is to know all of the Seven Grandfather Teachings and live by them. Truth is about not only “walking your talk” but also “walking your walk” and “talking our talk”. Truth is believing and having faith in the Teachings.

Wisdom

Wisdom is the lesson we gain through life experience. It is about learning from our mistakes or misfortunes. Wisdom can come from elders and children as our children are our biggest teachers in life.

Love

Love means learning to love you and to be at peace with self. Love means loving your wife, husband, children and family members. It can include showing respect and unconditional love for others (friends, extended family and community, etc.).

Humility

True honest to goodness humility is about being modest (not overtly showing one’s own importance). Perhaps teaching the understanding of humility is one of the greatest gifts to pass on to the younger generation.

Respect

Accepting everyone and not being judgmental. This may be through education, sports, leadership, race, culture and religion. It is about listening openly to other people while being sensitive to their feelings as taught through our Grandfathers and Grandmothers.

Honesty

Being upfront in everything you say and do without a hidden agenda or ulterior motive.

Courage

Overcoming life’s challenges having courage to take responsibility for one’s actions – right or wrong; fighting your greatest enemy – you – in the many forms that it may come – denial, hatred, shame, addictions, hatred, guilt, prejudice, jealousy, mistrust and lack of self-confidence.
